We started researching Hip Resurfacing in 2003 after discovering Clay needed to have hip surgery. We found an article here and there, information on the Device Makers sites...but the greatest help was a Discussion Group where patients told their stories. Where we could talk with those who had the surgery - days or perhaps years before. We got a snapshots of the patient's experiences.

Then we started talking with Resurfacing Surgeons and found they were interested in sharing information, but often found their time schedules laden with surgeries and research. We found others who built their skills and wanted patients to know about their practice.

This website has been built a bridge of information between the patients and Resurfacing Surgeons. To make sure the Patients are getting their concerns addressed and that the Surgeons are aware of the current high concerns in their patient community.

Meet Clay:

It was so difficult and time consuming for me personally to find out about what was wrong with my hip, find out about hip resurfacing, get fully informed and find the best surgeon for me--it was a chaotic process with no guidance--in fact, there was a lot of mis-guidance.

Hip resurfacing gave me back the life I wanted in May 2007. I was inspired to help make the process less chaotic and time consuming for the estimated 85,000 people per year who should get hip resurfacing, but instead, end up with a total hip replacement.

I wanted a site where people could get their questions answered by experienced surgeons, find people similar to themselves to communicate with, get information from device makers all in one place, find a competent surgeon, send him their X-rays and get going toward a new life.

This site is designed to do all these things and is pay back for all the help I have received along the way from surfacehippies and surgeons.

 Meet Jennifer:

As a technologist my focus has been on how use technology in Higher   Education and Learning environments. My Masters degree in Educational Technology was focused on "Communities of Practice".

I design and create Communities of Practice where there must be a tight focus on a desirable expertise that cannot be achieved without interaction between learners and experts. While researching Hip Resurfacing with Clay it became clear that the latest online technologies could be utilized to help patients expertly manage their own healthcare in this area. And of course, being married to one of the patients gave me a bird's eye view of the process.

I wanted to create an easy pipeline for questions from the patients to the doctors and answers from the doctors and device makers to the patients. I wanted the doctors to participate in the education of the patient community in an organized fashion that did not drag on their already over-taxed schedules.

A "Community of Practice" is a live and interactive site, not a static web site. I wanted to be actively involved facilitating this vital interchange. Facilitation is the art of creating the space for others to learn and grow without having them aware of the facilitator's persona. I'm here to support your learning whether you are a patient, a supporter or a health professional.

Hope to see you in the Community - Come Learn!
