Dr. Koen Desmet , M.D. Dr. Koen De Smet is a highly skilled and very experienced hip surgeon in Belgium, where standards of medical treatment and care are amongst the highest in the world. He is currently the director of the ANCA Medical Center in Ghent, Belgium and is the head of the Joint Replacement Institute of the Jan Palfijn Hospital in Ghent. A hip surgeon since 1995, he has performed about 5500 hip prosthesis surgeries, 2800 hip resurfacing surgeries and about 650 hip revisions, so that makes about 2050 primaries. He is the developer of several important resurfacing devices. A national and international lecturer, he has made countless presentations and is very well known and highly regarded in his field. In 2007, he was the recipient of the John Charnley Award in Chicago. He is currently a member of AAOS (American Academy for Orthopaedic Surgeons), ISTA (International Science and Technology in Arthroplasty), EHS (European Hip Society) and BVOT (Belgische Vereniging voor Orthopedie en Traumatologie).
