Swedish
Hip Registry
This is the home of the Joint Replacement Unit (JRU) - the prosthetic
team at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. One of our responsibilities is the maintenance
and development of the Swedish National Hip Arthroplasty Register. Responsible
for the content on this site is Professor Johan Karrholm, MD, PhD, Goran Garellick,
MD, PhD and Professor Emeritus Peter Herberts, MD, PhD.
Australian
National Joint Registry
The Australian Orthopaedic Association recognised the need to
establish a National Joint Replacement Registry in 1993. At that time, the outcomes
of this surgery in Australia were unknown. It was not even clear who was receiving
joint replacement or the types of prostheses and techniques being used to implant
them. The need to establish a Registry was in part based on the documented success
of a number of arthroplasty registries in other countries in particular the Swedish
Arthroplasty Registries.
Norwegian
Arthroplasty Register
The Norwegian Arthroplasty Register started registration
of total hip replacements in 1987. In 1994, registration was extended to include
insertion of all types of artificial joints. The main reason for establishing
a nation-wide register was that throughout the 1970ies, new hip implants had
been introduced without documentation from clinical studies. After being used
for more than 10 years, several of the prostheses were identified with high failure
rates, but had at the time already been used on large numbers of patients. The
main purpose of the register is to function as a surveillance tool to identify
inferior implants as early as possible.
