What retrieval
evidence is there of metal hypersensitivity?
-
Dr. De Smet: If the tissues are sent to a well recognized person (Pat Campbell
in LA for example) who has a lot of experience with metal ions in the blood then
we can state what is going on.
-
Is an allergy to metals a valid reason to deny hip
resurfacing
-
Dr. De Smet: No. 10%
of the people are allergic to nickel. That is not the percentage we find in resurfacing
or MOM hips. We should be aware that in resurfacing, females are where most metal
problems are found and we maybe should be looking into a percentage of about
1/60.
-
Is
this a valid reason not to use a MoM device?
-
Dr. De Smet: Yes,
it could be.
-
If
a patient has a skin allergy to certain jewelry, are allergic reactions to the
device expected?
-
Dr. De Smet: It
could be, but it is still a difficult decision to make. It just should be well
explained and well discussed with the patient.
