I've always been an athlete.
In my 40's and 50's I was running, swimming, rowing, and practicing martial arts.
Martial arts was the first to go. The kicks made my hip so sore I would limp
through the day and hurt through the night. Then the running had to stop, then
the skiing and finally hiking was out. Slowly, my athletic world became smaller.

and the pain got worse. More

My hip story began back in
1987 when I was a sophomore in college. I went to sit on the floor indian style,
but instead of sitting down on the floor and then crossing my legs, I crossed
my ankles while standing and lowered myself to the floor. As I reached the floor
and my right knee went out, I heard a pop and had immediate pain. Being a college
kid, I didn't want to bother with getting it looked at. I figured I could walk
on it so it must be okay. More

Date of Surgery: April 6,2006
Surgeon: Harlan Amstutz, Head Joint Replacement Institute Los Angeles, CA
Hospital: Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles, CA
Prior to surgery:
I noticed a stinging tightness in both hip joints after dancing, probably since
I was about 40 years old. It always went away with normal rest. I had full range
of motion, strength, endurance, etc. and so I thought this was what everyone
felt after taking class or performing. I really didn't have any significant pain
or limitations until early in 2005, when things went "downhill" extremely
quickly. More
