Thomas Parker Vail, MD

Dr. Thomas Vail is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduating from the Duke University School of Engineering cum laude with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, he earned his medical degree at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago. He completed his internship in General and Thoracic surgery and residency in Orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, and then went on to complete a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Vail's research interests include hip and knee joint biomechanics, biomaterials, articular cartilage injury and repair, and clinical outcomes after joint replacement. His clinical interests include conservative joint reconstruction options for younger patients, hip and knee joint replacement, hip resurfacing, less invasive approaches, management of bone loss, and treatment of avascular necrosis.

Dr. Vail graduated from the University School of Engineering with honors in Mechanical Engineering.  He attended medical school at the Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine, and then returned to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina where he completed preliminary training in General and Thoracic Surgery followed by a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. 

He completed a fellowship in surgery of the hip and knee sponsored by Duke University with exposure to multiple centers internationally.  Dr. Vail was on the faculty of the Duke University School of Medicine from 1992 to 2007, rising to be Professor and Director of Adult Reconstructive Surgery. 

He joined UCSF as the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in January of 2007.  Dr Vail’s research interests include hip and knee joint biomechanics, biomaterials, articular cartilage injury and repair, and clinical outcomes after joint replacement. 

During his career Dr. Vail has received research support from many groups including the National Institutes of Health, the Coulter Foundation, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, the Piedmont Foundation, and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, DePuy a J&J company, Wright Medical, Zimmer, Smith&Nephew, Sulzer, Wyeth-Ayerst, and Pfizer.  He serves as both an editor and reviewer for numerous journals, and has published over 150 journal articles, book chapters, and texts. 

He holds leadership roles in national orthopaedic organizations, and has lectured extensively around the world on topics related to arthritis and cartilage injury, hip replacement and resurfacing, and knee arthroplasty.  He has designed a number of devices and instruments including a cemented hip stem, a hip resurfacing device, a total knee device and instrumentation, and a patella resurfacing instrumentation system.
